Agoura Hills, CA

The history of Agoura Hills goes back to the 1700s when the Spanish arrived at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains and ran out the Native Americans who lived there. The Spanish developed a ranching culture that lasted through the 1900s, when families developed ranches for cattle and sheep, as well as farming for a variety of crops. It served as a stagecoach shop called "Vejar Junction" until the 1920s. After that, Paramount Studios bought a ranch in the area, earning it the nickname "Picture City." Today, the town of a little over 20,000 people is beautiful and scenic. It sits in Los Angeles County, right by Thousand Oaks, Malibu, and Calabasas, having a view of both the mountains and the ocean. The City's slogan is, "The Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains," and the town makes the most of its surroundings. The moniker "Picture City is still relevant, though it's no longer referred to by that name very often. People still tour the filming location of the show "M*A*S*H*" in Agoura Hills.

The town has only had the name since 1982. Before that, it was simply called Agoura, after one of the town's first landowners. The community had been growing since it began piping in water from the Colorado River in 1963. That reliable and consistent access to water meant businesses were more inclined to set up shop there, and the ranching culture shifted.

The Reyes Adobe Historical Site is a preserved home - the city's first, built back in 1850, and now serves as a museum and interpretive center. People can get a tour of the museum or have lunch in the nearby park and playground. The City holds family-friendly activities at the site on the second Saturday every month. Old Agoura Park is another popular place to visit. It includes a 2.2-mile trail, letting visitors enjoy wildflowers, butterflies, and other beautiful natural sights. Dogs are welcome on the trail, too. There are also events held in the park, like concerts and movie nights.

As for places to eat, Agoura Hills has no shortage of impressive dining options. Tavern Tomoko and Ladyface Brewery is a casual hangout where you can get an award-winning local craft beer and season cocktails, or wine by the glass. You can choose to eat either small plates of contemporary Japanese cuisine or American gastropub items in the same spot. For an elevated dining experience, you can visit Lure Fish House. Then, for dessert, check out Tifa Chocolate and Gelato. The homey shop offers hand-crafted gelato, chocolate candies, pastries, along with espresso and coffee or cold brew.
