Brentwood

Brentwood, California

For those looking to hob knob with celebrities, the community of Brentwood, Los Angeles, is the place to be. Since the 1930's stars such as Joan Crawford and Marilyn Monroe lived here, and today's roster includes LeBron James, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. Pickup games of basketball and football here must be tough. It's no surprise that the average home price of over 1.4 million dollars is almost 80% higher than the national average. At least there is safety in those numbers as Brentwood's crime rate is 44% lower than the average Los Angeles County neighborhood.

Even though the community had been a popular place of the Hollywood elite, it wasn't until 1994's infamous Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman murders and the OJ Simpson trial that followed that Brentwood gained worldwide notoriety. Paparazzi, journalists, OJ's fans, and the morbidly curious flocked here and turned up the volume on the quiet neighborhood. Once the hoopla died down, people realized what a great place to visit the area was.

As you can imagine, architecture is at a premium with the area's homes, and it is exemplified at the John Paul Getty Museum. There is something to the blending of medieval art and modern architecture that makes for an incredible experience. You can spend a day with living artwork at the museum's centerpiece, the 134,000 square foot Central Garden. With over 500 species of plants and flowers, including a cactus garden, you can get a new perspective with every visit.

For those who admire the architecture of the greats, you can visit Frank Lloyd Wright's George Sturges House built in 1939 and the Hunt Residence, designed by renowned architect Paul R. Williams in 1940. Their timeless styles are sure to amaze, and both are designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments.

Walkthrough the footsteps of the stars of yesteryear at the Brentwood Country Mart, which opened on November 18, 1948. Regulars included Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and Shirley Temple. Still popular after all the years is one of the first tenants back in '48, The Brentwood Country Mart Post Office Substation No. 1 and Trading Post. Old style services are available in the mart, and you can get a straight razor shave and a haircut (for more than 2 bits) at the famous Lloyds Barber Shop while getting your designer shoes, purse or handbag refurbished at Country Mart Shoe Repair.

A look for the tops in culinary delights won’t take you far. For the best in steaks, seafood, and upscale dining, Baltaire Restaurant is the place to go. Thrillist.com called this the top place to eat when someone else was paying. For the handheld crowd, grass-fed beef and healthy options are on the menu at Burger Lounge. If the after-dinner sweet tooth needs sating, don't miss Winston Pies, Compartes, or Sweet Rose Creamery.
