Camarillo

Camarillo

History

Camarillo, California, is located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, where you are only an hour from the city and 15 minutes from the beach. It was once known as "Rancho Calleguas." The Mexican government owned this 10,000-acre sprawl but in 1875, the Camarillo family acquired it. Rancho Calleguas was incorporated into the City of Camarillo in 1964, due to the development of U.S. Route 101. The city comes alive with its rich Mexican culture during festivals and celebrations. The Casa Pacifica Wine Food & Brew Fest, Camarillo Fiesta Street Fair, and Rebozo Festival are a few to enjoy.

Life Here

Residents enjoy 27 parks, four golf courses, skydiving, hiking, and so much more. There are ten elementary and intermediate schools, two high schools, and 17 private schools for those with children. Advanced educational opportunities are available with California State University Channel Islands (local) and those within driving distance, UCLA, Cal State, Oxnard, Pepperdine, and more. The area is a corridor for various industries that include Remd Biotherapeutics, SemTech, Titan Metal Fabricators, and Artisan Vehicles. Future development plans are in place to welcome new retail and dining establishments, the redevelopment around the Metrolink station, and a soon-to-be 4-star hotel and convention center.

Haunts Of Camarillo

The campus of California State University Channel Islands was once home to Camarillo State Mental Hospital, built in 1933. This asylum was the biggest of its kind west of the Mississippi. By 1957, it housed over 7,000 patients. Claims of "unusual" occurrences take place today at the university. Doors mysteriously open and shut while foggy mists travel at night around the grounds. Children's laughter and scratching sounds fill the walls of the buildings. Those who visited the abandoned asylum (before the university opened) had faces peering out of the windows in photos taken. A visit here may prove to be "eerily enjoyable."

White Horses

Camarillo's attractions include one of the world's rarest horse breeds that draw in visitors from around the globe. It is here that the Camarillo White Horses came into being. Their unique genetic mutation leads to a snow-white coat and beautiful blue eyes. Today, there are only 30 of these horses worldwide.
