Moorpark, CA

Located in sunny Ventura County, California, Moorpark is best known for having one of the lowest crime rates of cities its size in the country. Once one of the fastest-growing in the county, this city’s population swelled from about 34,400 in 2010, to an estimated over 36,200. The city has been known as Epworth, Penrose, Fairview, Fremontville, and Little Simi at different times. It was named for the Moorpark apricot which used to grow in the area, which in turn was named for Admiral Lord Anson’s Moor Park estate in Hertfordshire, England. Globally, Moorpark was one of the first cities to run off commercial nuclear power and the second in the country after Arco, Idaho.

The area was originally inhabited by Chumash natives, a tribe of hunters and gatherers. In 1795, Governor Diego de Borica of Alta, California, gave the Pico Brothers the area as part of the enormous Rancho Simi Land Grant. In the 1890s, the Southern Pacific Railroad announced plans to relocate its Coast Line route to San Francisco from Los Angeles through Chatsworth, the Santa Susana Mountains, and Ventura. Land speculation followed this announcement, and an investment banker named Robert W. Poindexter and his wife snapped up the land. By March, a depot had been constructed, and trains were pulling in daily. Approval for a post office was given that year, and in 1904 the Santa Susana tunnels were completed, cementing Moorpark’s place in history.

Moorpark College opened its doors on September 11, 1967, and is one of the only colleges that offer exotic animal training and management programs. In 2005, fairly complete remains of an uncommonly old Woolly Mammoth were discovered in the cities’ foothills near a housing development. The beasts’ fossils led scientists to believe that it was between 800,000 and 1.4 million years old and weighed 10 tons. Talk about an exotic animal.

If you’re around Moorpark and you’re looking for something to do, turn in any direction and throw a rock. Chances are, you’re going to hit something that you will spend hours of fun doing. If working on your stroke while playing the back nine sounds more like your kind of game, the Tierra Rejada Golf course offers players a challenging, engaging round while taking in the picturesque views. Afterwards, you can cool off and catch a flick at the Studio Movie Grill or a live stage show at the High Street Arts Center.
