Thousand Oaks, CA

Thousand Oaks is the second-largest city in Ventura County and sits on the northwestern border of Los Angeles County. The city of around 127,000 is about 40 miles from downtown L.A. Some four decades before the city was incorporated, the town was given its name after a teenager won a naming contest for the new settlement. The inspiration for the name was the tens of thousands of impressive oak trees that thrive in the valley and surrounding hillsides.

Thousand Oaks is situated in the area known as the Conejo Valley, an apt name as “Conejo,” which is Spanish for rabbits. The city’s hillsides are full of cottontails and untold numbers of gophers and other rodents.

Native Americans have inhabited the area for around 10,000 years. The Chumash people, who populated much of California’s central and southern coastal regions, are believed to have been the first to settle where Thousand Oaks is.

The city is a suburban paradise with natural attractions close to the coast and everything L.A. offers. Wildwood Regional Park provides many outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, jogging, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The park is home to Paradise Falls, a spectacular 70-foot waterfall that cascades through most of the year. The Arroyo Conejo Creek in the park is home to a nature center and Indian Cave. Visitors climb to the Lizard Rock formation on Mount Clef Ridge overlooking Thousand Oaks and the surrounding valley.

The privately owned Gardens of the World serve as a cultural attraction and an educational resource. The gardens feature horticulture from around the globe, focusing on Japanese, French, Spanish, and English plants and garden designs.

For those interested in a meal accompanied by some action, the Mighty Axe serves craft ales and a menu filled with variety in a rustic setting, complete with axe throwing for fun or competition. Singles and Doubles leagues are available, and knife throwing has been recently added.

Theater enthusiasts find everything from Broadway shows to community productions at the Thousand Oaks Theater League. Season tickets are available at the Bank Of America Performing Arts Center in the heart of town. The Conejo Players Theater also presents community-based productions and fantastic volunteer opportunities.

The city is home to the Thousand Oaks Auto Mall, billed as the nation’s largest group of car dealerships in a single area. It is a complex of 32 domestic and international brands, focusing on many luxury brands and attracting buyers from around the region with attractive offers and selections.
