Ventura, CA

Most people don't know that the official name of Ventura, California, is San Buenaventura. The city was founded in 1782 by Franciscan Friars. Legend has it that the name was shortened to fit on a local rail station sign. The friars were not the first to settle in the area. Archaeological findings showed humans here as many as twelve thousand years ago. The original Mission Basilica San Buenaventura burned to the ground and was rebuilt in 1809. The 1809 altar remains today.

Scenic beauty here is combined with so many activities and the beach life is some of the best California has to offer. Surfers of various skill levels often take to the waves at various Ventura spots. Mondo's beach has smooth breaking waves for beginners, while C Street/Ventura Point is the hot spot for more advanced surfers. The point is known for its long rides, and you can catch some world-class waves in the winter. For top-of-the-line equipment and beachwear, a trip to Ventura Surf Shop won't disappoint.

One of the year's highlights is the Ventura County Fair. The fair has been ongoing since 1875, and the grounds have a great ocean view. Iconic events are scheduled for the 12-day event, including pig races, gold panning, tractor pull, and much more. The live entertainment is top-notch, and in 2022 performers included The Beach Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick, just to name a few. Carnival games, exhibits, rides, and great food make the fair an unforgettable experience, and the nights end with a fireworks display.

Spend a day on the water with one of Island Packer's cruises. The Whale Watching cruise is a tourist favorite, and during the Island Wildlife Cruise, you may see dolphins, seals, marine mammals, and whales. If you are feeling adventurous, take a cruise to one of the islands for an overnight at one of the campgrounds.

For a more laid-back day surrounded by nature, take a stroll through the Ventura Botanical Gardens. Thirty thousand plants represent the five climate zones of the Mediterranean. You can see species like the lemonade berry, Eucalyptus trees, and the Chilean Soapbark Tree. The Soapbark tree has medicinal value and has been used in multiple vaccines.

Downtown Ventura is an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Antique lovers can buy, sell, or trade at The Ventura Antique Market or the Buffalo Exchange. At Bank of Books, you may uncover the rare 1st edition that's been eluding you. You can also take a trip around the culinary world at Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust, Bombay Bar & Grill, Dargans Irish Pub & Restaurant, and many more spots with international flair.

There is no shortage of spirits in Ventura, either. There are at least five spots that have many reports of ghosts. At the now-closed Bella Maggiore Inn, "Sylvia" had been known to pinch men's behinds. While over at The Pierpont Inn, you can find ghostly kids in the stairways, a dancing woman at the bar, and an old lady in the dining room.
